WHaT iS tHiS?!
A film festival that features work by students in Special Education
What kid doesn't love using a camera? Now more than ever, taking video and creating a film is an accessible way to integrate art and education. When those things are linked, learning is a joy.
Video allows students to connect to community through their unique talents.
The Film Festival from MARS aims to promote filmmaking as a vehicle for meeting the educational, emotional, social and developmental needs of students. Engaging children in filmmaking lets them create culture, information and entertainment so their perspectives and talents can be celebrated!
Inaugurated in 2016, The Film Festival From MARS is an annual, inclusive event
that showcases films by children who receive special education services and have a school-identified disability. Film projects eligible for submission include at least 50% participation by students with disabilities from grades k-12.
We are Educators,
teaching artists & school-based therapists
Filmmaking is learning
Making a film is project-based learning at its finest. Teachers, therapists and other arts program leaders facilitate the project as a means for students to deepen their synthesis of new knowledge while learning technical skills and cultivating creativity and self-expression. The arts of cooperation and collaboration are honed throughout the process as it takes a team to produce a film.
A vision for the future
We are a part of building a media arts culture that includes an array of voices as diverse as the human experience. We believe all children deserve to feel capable of and entitled to shaping the world around them. The MARS film festival is an expression of our commitment to teaching and promoting the art of communication and the communication of art to all children. Our programming encourages and incentivizes this practice as part of every child's educational experience because representation and self-determination matter.
